Informatics Research Seminar: The Pitfalls of Implementing “Off-the-Shelf” Early Warning Scores
April 10 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT
Speaker: Armando Bedoya, MD, MMCi
Presented from Duke
Broadcast Link: Seminar
Prior studies have looked at the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) performance in predicting in-hospital deterioration and death, but data are lacking with respect to patient outcomes following implementation of NEWS. We sought to determine the effectiveness of NEWS implementation on predicting and preventing patient deterioration in our health system. We will review the NEWS score and discuss the implementation of the NEWS within our Health System. We will also review the performance characteristics after clinical implementation.
Dr. Armando Bedoya is Medical Director of the Analytics Center of Excellence at Duke Health. He works to improve the quality and impact of our clinical and research deliverables to requestors throughout our organization. He also assists in the development and deployment of data science projects. His research includes predictive modeling in critically ill individuals (e.g. sepsis, respiratory failure) using electronic health record data.
