Innovation, Disruption, Teleaudiology: Experiences and Vision
Like other disruptive innovations that allow new populations of consumers to have access to products or services that they previously do not have, teleaudiology technologies have the potential to extend hearing-test services to and improve quality of life of traditionally underserved groups. In order to meet these needs, two generations of teleaudiology systems have been developed in the Teleaudiology and Engineering Laboratory at East Carolina University. While successful pilot studies have shown that the technologies are promising, the new systems sporadically interrupted some aspects of the traditional practice in the audiology field, including technology, reimbursement, and regulation/licensure. Drs. Givens and Yao will introduce their experiences in developing and testing these systems, describe barriers and disruptions during the process, and outline steps toward alleviating these disruptions. Strategies identified here can be taken by similar innovators to minimize disruptive impacts that their inventions bring to the society.
Gregg D. Givens, PhD is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at East Carolina University. He received a PhD in audiology from Florida State University. He holds five U.S. patents in the area of teleaudiology, along with several international patents in this area. Dr. Givens has over 30 peer-reviewed publications and over 200 national and international presentations.
Jianchu (Jason) Yao, PhD is an Associate Professor with the Department of Engineering at East Carolina University (ECU). He received his PhD in electrical engineering from Kansas State University in 2005. He has developed plug-and-play medical sensors for homecare and teleaudiology systems during the past 15 years. His current research interests include telehealthcare, bioinstrumentation, and biosignal processing. Dr. Yao has published over
50 peer-reviewed papers in these areas. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
